So, automobile companies come into play. The industry is a huge place. The Indian automobile industry has been a blessing to economic growth. It’s increasing rapidly with the new models. After the post-independence, when the automobile industry was thriving, some of today’s gems survived at that time. They are still dominating.

  1. Tata Motors Ltd

Established in 1945, this is one of the premier Indian automobile companies that is still dominating with its current vehicles. This name is familiar with every Indian household. Not only Indian but Tata Motors is a global name now. The company has spared its business in over 175 countries. With a wide range of vehicles like trucks, cars, and buses, the company possesses 134 subsidiaries across the globe. The company holds a market share in the Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicle (MHCV), Intermediate Light Commercial Vehicle (ILCV), and Small Commercial Vehicle (SCV) segments. Though this name is not so popular to the youth or many Indian people, this was one of the few Indian automobile companies that were established before the Independence era and survived subsequently. Still, Hindustan Motors is making vehicles. If you have seen or heard about the Ambassador, this company was responsible for making this. Headquartered in Kolkata, Hindustan Motors was founded in 1942 by B.M Birla. Now the company is a part of Birla Technical Services. Right now, they have only two manufacturing plants, Uttarpara and Pithampur.

Coming from the flagship group of Mahindra Group, M & M Ltd is one of the largest Indian automobile companies that started operation in 1945. They have a  wide range of products including SUVs to electric vehicles, pickups, commercial vehicles, tractors, two-wheelers, and construction equipment. This is the third-largest company by sales. With over 42,000 employees, they are operating in over 100 countries all over the globe.

Who hasn’t heard about Hero Honda? The company became the world’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer in 2001, in terms of sales in a calendar year, and has maintained the title for the past 18 consecutive years. Being one of the few Indian automobile companies, Hero MotoCorp Ltd is headquartered in New Delhi. They have 8,599 employees as of 2020.

If you are looking for native Indian automobile companies, Bajaj Auto is another name that comes to mind. Currently spreading over 70 countries, this is the fourth-largest manufacturer of two and three-wheelers. Established in 1945, the company is part of Bajaj Group. Headquartered in Pune, Baja Auto mainly makes motorcycles, Scooters, and Auto Rickshaws. In 2020, Bajaj Auto crossed Rs 1 lakh crore market capitalization that pushed the company to become the world’s most valuable two-wheeler company.

Coming from the flagship company of Hinduja Group, Ashok Leyland is a multinational Indian automobile company. Founded in 1948, the headquarter is situated in Chennai. As of 2020, they are possessing 11, 463 employees. The company is the 2nd largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles in Indian, the 3rd largest manufacturer of buses in the world, and the 10th largest manufacturer of trucks. They also have manufacturing facilities spread across the globe including UAE, and the UK.

Established in 1978, this is the 3rd largest 2-wheeler manufacturer in India. They have current production of 4 million units. Being one of the big Indian automobile companies, it has 4 manufacturing plants located in Tamil Nadu, Mysore, Himachal Pradesh, and Karawang. Headquartered in Chennai, the company specializes in making motorcycles, scooters, and 3-wheelers.

Many people may not be familiar with the name but when it comes to Royal Enfield, remember Eicher Motors is the parent company now. Established in 1958, Force Motors has become an integral entity when it comes to tractors. Though the name was Bajaj Tempo Motors until 2005, it became popular by launching Tempo, Matador, Minidor, and Traveller. Headquartered in Pune, they are serving worldwide with over 10,00 employees. So, it became one of the few Indian automobile companies which dominate the Indian market.

Formerly known as Premier Automobiles Limited, Premier Ltd is owned by Walchand Group. The company was established in 1944 by Walchand Hirachand with the encouragement and support of Sir M. Visvesvaraya. They are especially known for making the Premier Padmini that ruled the Indian car market at one point of time between 1970-80.  Headquartered in Mumbai, the company is confined to the Indian domestic market only.
